Romanesque
doorways at Ballintubber Abbey, Co. Mayo, Ireland.
The abbey was founded in 1216 by King Cathal O'Connor. Ballintubber means
"well town", and a holy well can be seen on the property. Here St. Patrick
baptized the pagans in 441 AD. Although suppressed and damaged by
the Protestants during the Reformation, restorations have taken place in 1966
and 1997. This photo was taken in August of 1983 with a Ricoh
Singlex TLS 35 mm SLR equipped with a 55 mm f/1.7 Prinz Auto Rexatar lens
on Kodak Kodacolor VR100 film. The negative was enlarged optically with a
Beseler 23CIIXL enlarger and a 50 mm f/2.8 Rodenstock Rodagon lens on
Kodak Panalure Single Weight Fiber Base silver gelatin photo
paper. Processing was done using Kodak chemistry.
