The
metal obelisk in this photo is a public sculpture known as "Curve XXII", by Ellsworth
Kelly. It is located at Fullerton Ave. and Cannon Dr. in Chicago. While walking past in September
of 1982, I was struck by how the afternoon sun reflection was banded across the curve
of the sculpture. After much jockeying, I managed to catch the rays of the sun as they
shimmered from the corner to the base.
The photo was taken with a Ricoh
Singlex TLS 35 mm SLR equipped with a 55 mm f/1.7 Prinz Auto Rexatar lens
on Kodak Panatomic-X film. The negative was enlarged optically with a
Beseler 23CIIXL enlarger and a 50 mm f/2.8 Rodenstock Rodagon lens on Agfa
Multigrade Classic MCC111 Double Weight Fiber Base silver gelatin photo
paper. Processing was done archivally using Kodak chemistry, with a
final toning with Kodak Rapid Selenium Toner, treated with hypo clearing
agent, and washed in an archival washer.
