An Emerald Isle Experience: A Visit for Vacation

Just a touch on the non-touristy places you can spend your time on in the Bogue Banks Island and sound area. We will focus here on two places – Fort Macon, and Beaufort City. There are many other natural areas to see as well; we have presented some of them separately in the movements labeled “Nature” and “Water”.

Fort Macon State Park is a restored pre-Civil War fort, that saw service through the Civil War up to the Second World War.

Beaufort was established in 1713 and is the fourth oldest town in North Carolina. Beaufort, besides being a typical Southern small town, has an interesting historical district, a fascinating maritime museum, and a historic boatbuilding shop.
